[ Laptop external VGA output + projectors - this article here http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/feature/14885.html ]
After having a short discussion with a SuSE developer, it transpires that they expect a projector on a laptop VGA output to just work, by switching the external VGA to display the same as the internal one (resolution etc), and to always use 60Hz. The laptop LCD doesn't care about any frequency (within reason), and all projectors cope with 60Hz. It's a question of configuring the X server correctly, and that works as described in Jana's article. I don't know whether any X.org server fixes were implemented by SuSE, but it was suggested that most of the problems described by Nick + Steve had to do with the X server. This all holds for 9.3, 9.2 is supposed to do it too however sax doesn't support configuring it. 9.1 and earlier won't support this setup because thier X.org don't either. The 9.3 live DVD would be a good test case. The good news is that there should be an X.org configuration which reliably runs a projector on various hardware, but it needs a reasonably recent X.org and the configuration itself mighn't be straightforward to find.
