heh I had just assumed it was the harddisk. My bad. The entry I found
for it is: hdc: DVD-ROM BDV316C, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive. And after
googling the error message I remember someone with a DVD player that
hadn't yet been zoned getting this message... As for media... it was
empty at the time :S

In the afore mentioned search I came across smartmontools for the first
time, hadn't heard of them before. Thanks, will check it out.
