I plugged in a DSE 56k PCMCIA modem, Ubuntu (Hoary) recognised it OK,

Suggestions?
I solved this by ignoring the "Network" GUI configurator (stop it from
dialling automatically), and opening a terminal screen. Wvdial command
should run, but needs configuring - you have to draft in the
/etc/wvdial.conf file - I'll mail you my template offlist if required.
Permission & group for this should be user, though root will work
(security hole thus?)
That's it. ~$wvdial feeds you back the connect speed, and the fastest
performance I have seen from my (33K6) card.
