Um! no, Telstra is listed on the Aussie & Kiwi stock exchanges and the largest shareholder is the Australian Government.
I am also a Telstra shareholder. Regretfully a small one, of insufficient influence to demand that they lay high capacity cable to my front gate. Interestingly the foaming at the mouth of Kiwis when mentioning the level of products and services from Telecom can also be observed across the ditch when Aussies refer to Telstra.
