Hey Steve, come down ;) and give a man a break to do some research
before replying. That's why I replied out of order. I do appreciate your
answer, but no need for getting a copy from you - if I'm looking at how
to download >2GB, chances are I can cope with 2MB :)

Thanks for your cvs commands and pointing out that the beta has
improvements. I also found a very recent posting by the wget author
(http://www.mail-archive.com/wget%40sunsite.dk/msg07726.html) in which
he says that 1.9 doesn't support large files, but the 1.10 beta does.
There's also a link to a tar of the source.

wget 1.10 is by no means the only ftp client which can handle large
files. Apart from lftp, at least ncftp{get} (I didn't check this) and
curl can do as well. That's if curl -V shows "Largefile" under features.
curl -O <singleurl> is the closest to wget. There can be more urls, but
then there also need to be at least as many -OOOOOOOOOOs to prevent
downloaded data appearing concatenated on stdout (whoever thought that
feature to be useful?). lftp -c 'get <singleurl>' works too for >2GB.

Thanks Philip for pointing out the multiple steps of putting together
several ftp commands and editing/splitting the URL to get a single file.
(There's must then also a way to put it into the background.) I'm afraid
it's more convoluted (= less user-friendly) to copying a URL with the
mouse from a web page, typing
        nohup wget <middle-click> & <enter>
and forgetting about it for a few days. There's no doubt though that
lftp is a *very* good interactive ftp client. A tool for each purpose,
add personal taste, stir, let stand until set.

That's the (no doubt incomplete) summary of possibilities. Perhaps
someone else might find it useful too.
