Indeed, but think of the size of the black cloud which would decend on them if 
they cancelled gmail now. It's established and popular, so it would be a 
virtually unthinkable to kill it off. imho they are wanting to keep the "by 
invitation only" thing alive so that they have some level of control over who 
gets an account.

In your particular situation I still recon it's probably the best for your 
boarder.

Perhaps s/permanent/hopefully long lasting/ might be better.
