The following suggestions (thanks) were tried after logging in with user
name and password (and su)
check that the X session is running on Ctrl-Alt+F7
nothing happens
check runlevel entries for each tty in /etc/inittab
permission denied
if stuck in console you can start kde with-
'xinit /opt/kde/bin/startkde &'
no such file or directory
from what I could glean from the partitions in /etc/fstab they appeared to
be OK
I'm not overly concerned with getting the PCMCIA mounted any more...just
booting to the kde desktop!
From memory when something happened like this last time it was a case of
running rescue from F12 prompt at startup..
