Well I wanted to be able to get details for movies I have stored on my
media computer, instead of manually inputting the metadata.

In mythtv you can browse your movies and see a nice poster, plot
summary, directors etc (examples

http://mythtv.sourceforge.net/mc/mythvideo5.png) - although to date I
have been entering metadata myself.

In fact the functionality is built right into mythtv, where I was aiming
to put it! It does a search based on the file name and if there are
several possibilities offers you a choice:

Last time I used it, the imdb web pages had changed, and the myth system
wasn't working, so i was looking to use a script that did work so I
could stop doing it manually.

However the myth system seems to have been fixed, so i am happy.

Well it could still do with some tweaking, but that can wait! For
example it does not handle tv programs well, nor file names that have
lots of extra gunk in them (like Incredibles-dvdrip-xvid-blah.avi)
