[Sorry about the pun.] I was having a bit of a problem with sound (Intel 82801 (ICH5) AC'97) under FC4 (kernel 2.6.12). The sample sound played by system-config-soundcard was perfect, but anything that went through esd [1] sounded broken and choppy. However, thanks to a but of googling I found that the problem is a setting that Fedora fails to put into place for esd. If this sounds like you, add "-r 48000" to the end of the "spawn_options" line in "/etc/esd.conf". This changes the sample rate to something that the sound-hardware can handle.
