Could I just point out that top redraws the screen every 3 seconds, and the first set of data that you see is historical - and may be an average of many days. From the first redraw on is current information.

Good point. I tend to watch it for a couple of refreshes just to see if anything else is popping up the list.

This is of almost no real relevance, unless you're writing a script to parse this information, and expect the first page to have current info.

If you want to parse the output then the "vmstat" command is a good choice.

However, if you are writing something like that you are possibly reinventing a wheel...
