further notes to follow up:

1. the error -8182 message seems to come fron openssl, not the imap or
smtp server or thunderbird (ssl is the encryption mechanism)

2. I found a thread suggesting thet firefox had a bug related to problems
installing certificates where the CN is the same name as the certifying
authority (which in this case is you, so its possible this is relevant)

3. given the common code base history between ffox and tbird, this is
worth looking into IMHO.
