Yes it would have worked just the same. It's your responsibility to adjust the action lines (delivery statements) to suit your very own personal mail storage format. Delivering to mail formats is mentioned in the procmail man pages. The fact that there are a variety of mail storage formats, all more or less obnoxious, is unfortuntely a fact of life.
