Yes. Current thinking is that Linux and ATI leave a nasty taste when mixed.
The available drivers for my 9700 mobile on the works laptop are stunning. You just need a bit of work to install them.

The problem with the ATI linux drivers other than that they can prove dificult to install is that the performance is crap compared to the ATI Windows drivers. Trying to play UT2K4 with my Radeon 9800xt using the linux drivers is just painful.
