What sort of maps do you want?
Ecan has aerial photographs of much (all?) of Canterbury available
online; you can save them as PNG images. I can make out my house in the
appropriate one.

LINZ has topographic maps at 1:50000 online, but you can only save these
as PDF.

Hey Craig,
Now I'm up and running wireless ( 200mW + 15dbi external aerial! ) I'd
like to extend your wireless map over the water, but can't find any decent
pictures to overlay. It made me laugh when testing - there's plenty of
open access points!
Have you got any of Diamond Harbour?
Cheers,
Steve
PS. I've got another card that *might* get to Lyttelton with judicious use
of a pringle tin if anyone's interested!
As you probably know i live in Lyttelton, and have a number of wireless
(802.11b) cards, including two pci cards whach will take external
aerials, as well as numerous small router-suitable junk^h^h^h^h boxes.
My house is partially wired for networking, and if i lose some weight i
can probably put a box in the highest part of the roof connected to an
external aerial (it pays to keep the aerial wire as short as possible,
which means siting the box close to the aerial. Alternatively the usb
devices can allow a longer cable between computer and aerial (because
the wireless device is at the aerial end of the cable)
I've always wanted to set up a small wireless net. I'm not sure if it
would make it over the harbour. worth a try i would have thought. I have
no idea of the "crow flies" distance.
Now where in DH are you? I am in Brenchley Rd at the top right of this
map:
