Are you recording from a microphone, or from an external source (like a turntable or vcr)? Have you tried the line-in instead of the microphone? Does the problem only arise in linux? Is it any different in windows? (Assuming windows is available) Is the mixer set to capture the channel you want to record? What software are you using to make the recording?
