We use a Brother HL5040 at our office - it's been a GREAT workhorse. I refill the toner myself and haven't replaced a drum yet (supposed to have about 5000 copies ago =) Works well via USB under Linux yada yada.

Brother HL2040 from Bond & Bond, Riccarton Mall recently. 600 dpi,
claimed 20 ppm, toner and drum replaced separately ($70 for 2500 copies
and $200 for 12 000 copies). Parallel and USB.

I have an old Brother HL-730 working well with GNU/Linux too (parallel). Sewing machine twice-removed..
