i didn't think it was the hard way, i didn't even consider that there
could be an easier way until i saw the ruby version.
i think verifying afterwards that there was no easier way took longer
than writing the code.

i guess pike developers didn't think that such an unquote function would
be generic enough to make it into the pike library. (roxen and caudium,
the main pike applications to need this have implemented it in C)
