...no cdrom device is seen, then. That's your problem. It could be that your secondary ide channel is stuffed, or that the cable is, given that you've tried 2 cd drives it's unlikely to be the drive itself.
You might try plugging it in as a slave device on the primary channel. Then it *should* appear as /dev/hdb.
