Do you have a mini pci slot in your lappie? If so, I'd recommend that you
populate that instead. I use an Aetheros AR5212 which is supported by the
madwifi project ( they produce betas daily, but it's solid as a rock on my
tosh.

Alternatively, ime you're stuck with 11MBbit stuff to some extent. I've
also had success with the d-link dwl-120+ ( the + is *very* important! )
usb connector. This has th advantage of a big aerialon the end of a 1m
cable... perfect for mounting on top of a helmet when out warbiking (:
