I'm afraid the ctrl-alt-bacjspace has been a feature of Linux X11 for
well over a decade, and at times a very useful one too.

As a desktop user, the computer crashes and loses my work. I really
don't care whether it is the kernel, X or Open Office that failed---I
just grumble a bit, restart the computer and get going again. I select a
system that does not crash often, and that, when a crash happens, does
not lose too much work.
If my computer were a (file-, print-, compute-, web, etc-) server, then
crashes are different. I want to be able to restart the failed service
without interrupting the others. It is useful to be able to restart
things quickly. However, I don't believe that a combination of keys is
the correct answer.
Was it Raskin who said (paraphrased from memory) that the ease of doing
an action should be related to the ease with which it can be undone?
As a desktop user, one thing I definitely do not want is a combination
of keystrokes that will guarantee that I lose my work. History is all
very well, but, as a desktop user who just wants to use the computer to
write emails and documents and compile and debug code, I will be
disabling the 'zap' feature.
