Looks like the stumbling block is which midi card you're using. alsa is probably the best starting point, as you don't want to revert to oss!
RedHat is pretty long in the tooth now... although the CentOS offerings of RHEL are fine. However, if you're using apt to install, it may be a better idea to use a debian-based distro. Also, the planet website offers solutions for FC1->3. I've got a set of CD's if you want to use FC3. Finally, midi is realtime. This means that if you're running a gui on old hardware, then you're going to have problems. However, I'd expect you to have more on M$ with that little memory.
