Helped a neighbour set up his winmodem last night. Of course he has been
putting off sorting the modem for so long that he now has Mandrake 9.2 -
probably really needs a whole new distro! Still he is keen so thats
good.

The sm56 rpm package for mandrake 9.x series worked very well. Its a bit
weirdly packaged though, it installs a whole lot of files to /tmp, then
the post-install script compiles the modem driver, installs the driver,
fiddles with modules.conf and then all the stuff in /tmp disappears. It
has no formal dependency on gcc, although if you don't have gcc
installed the rpm install seems to go ok, but leaves a little error
message on the screen. Therefore the rpm database thinks sm56 is
installed but it hasn't really worked. weird. Also the rpm database
thinks there are a whole lot of files installled in /tmp, but the setup
script deleted them (or was it the reboot?)

Ah well it worked I guess.
