It turns out that cdparanoia (on my old workstation) grabbed the tracks first time but the studio had added those deliberate errors for copy protection, so the music is full of clicking. The CD drive in my server won't even accept the disc.

My next plan was to fire up Audacity and record from the optical input (gotta keep it digital). That would have required moving the CD player which is a little inconvenient, so I decided to re-try the good old marker pen trick. This time iTunes has grabbed it perfectly (at about 1/4 of its usual speed though). Maybe I'd gone a little overboard with the marker pen last time.
