At my last job I always wondered about doing that, but the desktops were Windows-only due to corporate-mandated software. The build system we had at the time for testing/debugging was a couple of dual P4s running dmake on Solaris x86.
These days I'm working more with scripted languages, although it would be nice to get my hands dirty with some C again.
