Thanks everyone. Yes it was simple in the end. sessions or "session manager" was what I needed to google for.

K -> Control Panel -> KDE Components -> Session Manager -> On login -> Start with an empty session. Log back in again, and all is good now. I'll probably change that back to "restore previous session".

~/kde/Autostart/ was empty, but now I've dragged a couple of desktop icons into there to make the start up environment I do want.
