Indeed! Even 3.0 is not fully up to date when compared to the CTAN sources.
For example, I have tetex-3.0 in which the ttf2tfm utility is missing the 
-w option. Unfortunately the new ttf2tfm source won't compile on its own. 
Does this, in effect, mean that I have to untar the whole thing and 
rebuild it _all_ after replacing the old ttf2tfm?
