It's possible to get KDE to play any sound file for the system bell; this however only affects KDE apps. Additionally, konsole needs to have its bell set to "system notification". Nothing from any other app.
Now I've tracked down (trip to dirty garage corner) an old speaker and hooked it up. Works fine on the consoles when pressing ctrl-G. Under KDE - nothing, from any application incl xterm, even when I set everything to PC speaker. There's a hint that kernel 2.6 needs module pcspkr, but that's compiled in. It works fine under X when using no window manager in a failsafe session. Therefore, it's a KDE problem. And I think I'm going to sock a bug to the KDE people, because I've just found it: it's in K control centre -> regional & accessibility -> accessibility -> bell. D'oh!! If everything's turned off there, nothing will ever come out of the mobo speaker. On the positive, one can turn any mix of 3 possible bells on... Oh and btw, the pitch/duration of this speaker beep is controlled by K control centre -> sound & multimedia -> system bell. Double d'oh!
