thanks for the replies, they got me thinking about $PATH so I did a bit
more digging and low and behold I had the following line in my script:
"unset PATH # suggestion from H. Milz: avoid accidental use of $PATH"
I commented out the "unset PATH" and the date output printed in my
logfile first time
