coming to you via webmail, on konqueror in suse 9.1 running in vmware server, running on xp. I can now clarify some of the gaps in understanding from yesterday. It will indeed install on XP, a minor hack to the vmware config file was all that was needed to get this machine started (the option that needed changing was greyed out). When running the server console, and you connect to the local host, you pretty much have vmware workstation (I am sure there are differences but this is what it looks like to me). "server" means that I could log off from Windows, and from another machine on the network (either a windows or linux box) use the vmware console to connect to this virtual machine. I will try some of this when I can. The more interesting thing to do though is install in linux and get a windows vm going. Each guest machine does NOT require a separate partition, the files just sit in a folder as in workstation. Documentation on the vmware site is not currently very helpful. The forums are the place to look. This machine is an Athlon XP 1800 with a gig of RAM, the performance is a noticeably slower though still very usable. I'm sure that allocating more than the 256MB of RAM would improve things. The final release of vmware server is scheduled for Q2 2006 hence the supposed expiry on the beta. This is cool, well worth checking out! Does it replace the need for the workstation version? Could well do!!! Don't go buying it without checking out server... Cheers, Roger > > I have second-hand indications that it will expire on 7/13/06. >
