A digression regarding Telecom Govt and betrayal.

Do you recall studying the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact[1] in history.

This treaty was between the two most mean unprincipled sharks in history.
Hitler and Stalin in which they agreed not to attack one another. We all know
what happened to that promise

Telecom promised to unbundle the local loop, Telstra Clear(TC) believed them.

Do you see history repeating itself?

I know of an a TC customer who offered to lay a cable between their own
premises and the Telstra Clear exchange entirely at their own expense.

TC turned them down flat. TC had a promise from Telecom that it would unbundle
the local loop allow TC to install interconnection equipment in Telecom
exchanges, and an assurance from the Govt that Telecom would be made to
behave itself.

Think of all the interconnect fees that TC would have saved itself if it had
learnt from history and taken up its customers offer.

I agree with Dave that giving BCL a mandate to supply internet would have a
far more bracing effect on Telecom than a intervention from the Commerce
Commision. The Govt should also include Transpower OnTrack and Transit NZ in
their internet initiative.
