Does anybody know how to recover the data? Is there any Open Source tool for
recovering it to a temporary location?

Maybe try disable some stuff via hdparm like

su
hdparm -D -A0

# Copy data off

dd if=/dev/hdb of=stonking_big_file

Then loopback mount it.
