But it did read it during boot.  dd_rescue couldn't read it; as I said, I 
don't know why.

As far as I can make out, almost all the damage was in the /boot, / and 
the /usr partitions.  The /home partition was almost undamaged, except for a 
ghost directory which made cp throw its hands up.
