My parents email address has an ampersand in it. I set it up for them and was 
assured by the ISP that having an ampersand in the email address was OK.

They have never had their email address rejected by a pop server because it 
had an ampersand in the from address.

Where they have struck problems is on e-commerce sites where they were 
required to enter an email address to receive confirmation details. Airline 
on line ticket booking sites are a particular offender here.
