One of her good points is that i've not let her suck on windows.

The only system she uses for emailing IS LINUX and kmail.

if i've used windows and she wants to view emails i pop her onto webmail and 
she looks at her mail online - no if's no butts!

regarding Thunderbird did use it for a couple of months (can't recall why or 
what happened but i went back to Kmail).

me thinks it maybe time to revisit the mailer.

as i've said before she found it quite funny about how the topic had a life of
