ok so that was the wrong link, I needed the 32bit version which I have tried to
install.  First the error was that I needed to have the kernel source installed,
which I got from the install DVD via YAST.  Now the error is:
"No precompiled kernel interface was found to match your kernel; this means that
the installer will need to compile a new kernel interface".

Then:
"ERROR: you do not appear to have libc header files installed on your system. 
Please install your distribution's libc development package"

I have searched through the YAST software management utility for instances of
libc and devel for anything looking relevant and have come to a dead end.  

Anyone know the way from here?

I really appreciate all the replies :-)
I might go and borrow a network card from another machine...
