Yuri deG Still a maybe, but will be sure by Thursday. Laptop: P4, 2Ghz, 256MB Ram, 20GB IDE HD, currently running Mandrake 10.0 Gentoo install will be a complete replacement, entire HD available.
10/100 built-in NIC and built-in sound currently recognised by Mandrake 10.0 and knoppix, so Gentoo should have no probs (I hope). I haven't tried very hard to get built in dial-up modem working - it's not needed since the modem in my IPCOP box works fine.
