Following up on this - I have started from scratch, reinstalled SuSE and followed the info at http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/feature/15963.html and http://en.opensuse.org/Setting_up_VMware_on_SUSE_Linux
Not the ideal way of solving, it, however running nicely now and I had invested very little time in that installation. I am unclear whether any further kernel updates will break vmware again even with the latest any-any-update patch. From my googling, my experience with vmware breaking as a result of such updates is common, and it is not clear what the right fix may be for any particular situation. The reply I got from the vmware forum: "You have applied some very old vmware-any-any-update to your system. You must use vmware-any-any-update99, anything older does not work with build 22088. Plus VMware Server build 22088 should work on your system without any additional patches." I'm very nervous about further kernel patches, for now I'm going to leave them alone...
