Hi I have Ubuntu 5.1 on my machine on a dual boot with Windows.

I need some help getting it configured; the main thing is the ADSL modem,
also the USB 2.0 drivers and printer.

If anyone is in the Burwood area today and would like to help me I can re
pay with some beers or whatever else you think is fair.

Please email me first.

Cheers

I have been reading this thread with some interest and can recall what is like starting off with Linux, talk about a steep leaning curve!

I would concur with nearly all the comments made by the other CLUG members, however our individual experiences & attitudes can colour our perceptions of the same event(s) eg. what does free mean?

If you are happy to just pay the money and plug things in and they will work (well most of the time anyway) & and make the worlds richest men richer by climbing on the whole version: 3a, 3b, 3.1, 98?, 2K, X?, "student", "office", "professional" blah blah blah $$$$ treadmill then forget Linux because it requires a bit of effort to get things sorted.

I guess it depends what you want out of your computer experience really. I wasn't happy to do that and I enjoyed learning a bit of new stuff in the process but it required a bit of reading and at times frustration.

PRINTER:
I am currently running (among others) Ubuntu 5.10 and have previously had a Canon i550 printer running on this machine. I got zero support from the Canon Support site getting it to run, but plenty form the members of this list.

Needless to say I ficked it at the first opportunity in favour of a better Linux supported printer (but it is still running on my elderly mothers computer - she is using Ubuntu 5.10 also! - although at times I'm not that sure she realises that??)

USB ADSL modem:
I understand that can be tricky, so I took the soft option: pluged it into the network card and Ubuntu did the rest (so that can be very straight forward, depending on the modem), but its not that had to configure

Any way long story short:

I'm a bit of a novice compared to most of the "gurus" on the list but I am fairly familiar Ubuntu having set up several dual boot Windows/Ubuntu machines now.

If I can help you with the basic stuff just let me know

Also this is a guide is really good, its a sort like a of cookbook of fixes, you just copy and paste the "code" entries into a terminal window and hit enter (bookmark it in Firefox browser for quick access):
