more specifically (now booted to ubuntu)

My version of ubuntu is 5.04, but it should work similarly for your
version (5.10):

A. You need to be online. Options are - if you have another computer
running windows get it online and use Internet Connection Sharing. Or go
to a friends as previously suggested. Or get it working via modem. Or do
it at a meeting at St Albans. Or borrow an ethernet-connected ADSL modem
from one of the kind souls who has already offered.

1. Once you are online, Go to the System menu and choose Administration
then Synaptic Package Manager. You will be asked for your password,
enter it.

2. Once you are in synaptic go to the Settings menu then Repositories.
This defines the places that ubuntu will go to to get packages to
install.

3. The package you want is in the "Universe" repository so you need
click "Add" then tick the "Community Maintained (Universe)" box and
click "OK". Ubuntu will then download a list of the available packages.

4. Once back to the synaptic main window click on "Search" and enter
eciadsl in the search box, click the button and it should return one
package. Right click on the line and choose "Mark for Installation" - it
may tell you that other packages are also needed, thats just fine.

5. Click "apply" and it should give you a dialog asking you to confirm
what is about to happen. If it looks ok click "apply" and it will
download and install the packages you need.

6. In the dialog "Installing Software" you may need to click the button
that says "Terminal" and type "Y" to the question about restarting
services.

S**T. At this point realise that the ubuntu eciadsl-0.10 package seems
to lack the setup binaries, and the firmware files. What an ass of a
package. I wonder if 0.11 is any better. Further reporting later, but as
I don't have the modem it is hard to see whether it will ultimately
work.
