Might pay to also check that the /boot partition is active, but I'm unsure whether it's necesssary. Might depend on whether the boot loader goes to MBR or elsewhere (my raid1 system seems to have it on /boot, not in the MBR). > never actually needed a system.map or device-map, don't even know what > they are! Mapping between /dev/X and grub's hdX number scheme (gee I love it - why not add one more layer of complexity for no gain, and call it hd0 instead of hda - must have been invented by a geek ;) ). My SUSE's grub always finds the map itself, as I said Red Hat's doesn't hack it, so spends minutes(!) on each startup probing the system, unless you tell it where the map is.
