Mepis is totally not dissimilar to Ubuntu. Except that it uses the KDE desktop[1] instead of Gnome (at least, I believe Ubuntu uses Gnome). It'll look slightly different to Ubuntu, but will provide similar if not identical features. If you could enumerate your simple needs then we could tell you if it will fulfil them, however, Ubuntu is just as likely to meet your needs too, and it is likely that you only need a small amount of help to sort that out. I picture your situation as a chap who has been sold a house without a wardrobe. You know you want a wardrobe and you are sure you'd be happier with your house if it had a wardrobe in it. So, you did some research, and now you've got the wardrobe sat on the drive, but you're buggered if you can figure out how to get the wardrobe into the house. All it takes is a well-meaning individual to assist you and you'll be sorted. Your approach seems to be more along the lines of "I'll get a different house, and maybe it will be better", but really, it's still a house. It'll still need some work for you to be comfortable with it. I better stop now as I can see the house analogy failing, the longer I let it continue. A -- [1] Just for the record, we've established your favourite editor is 'vi', so we need you to recognise that your favourite desktop is 'KDE'. Again, you are entirely at liberty to choose any of the others, but don't forget, KDE is your favourite. =:^)
