success with mplayer. eventually.  had to download the rpm.  needed to
install win32all codecs FIRST, then mplayer (so remove of mplayer - and
realplayer, kaffeine etc - and reinstall mplayer was required). 
initially managed to get it running from the command line after seeing a
"error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device" error. 
a quick google found the answer quickly.  as neil mentioned yesterday, i
now seem to be able to get it to play any video file i have put it's way
so far.
