Now replying to my own email in case the answer is useful to someone else.
There appears to be a bug in gphoto2-2.1.5 in respect of my camera, a
Canon S1IL which fails to handle avi files > 100meg.
I removed the rpm files with rpm -e nodeps gphoto....., Then compiled
and installed from src gphoto2-2.1.99.
My problem has gone away.
