I have my cousins computer here, it is meant to run winXP home addition.
Theres some strange things going on with it :
Cant get into Outlook Express because it keeps asking for an idenity, but
it wont allow you to create one.
I think that was one of the problems created by one of MS's Critical Updates
recently. The latest update may fix it.
Thunderbird.
Trying to install winzip but the best that
I can get is having to re-install it over and over.
Why do you need WinZip? WinXP has its own built in extractor. (Does not
compress stuff though.)
7-Zip.
Setting desktop icons
makes no difference (nothing changes).
Not sure what you mean by this.
So here is the *nix question :
I tried running Damn Small Linux live cd and it immediately comes up with
an error : Only one processor found.
I find much of what Linux based OS's do kinda back the front, so is it
actually reporting an error because if it is it would explain much of the
problems with the comp.
Thanks guys
??
I would agree with the general trend toward advising a reformat. Save
whatever data you can first of course. Get some good Free (both kinds)
and Open-Source software on there afterwards. I would recommend 7-Zip
instead of WinZip and Thunderbird over Outlook....(and the list goes on)
For hardware diagnostics you can't go past the linux-based Ultimate Boot
CD freely downloadable from www.ultimatebootcd.com. Use whatever hard
drive test is appropriate, and memtest86+ also, make sure you get any
drivers you'll need before you reformat.
