Yeah - it was me who asked the same a couple months back.

Basically an & is a fully legal character according to the RFC, but you're
depending on the programmers to follow the specs to the letter, both for
your ISP and for the remote ISP.

In fact "@@\<@@\>@@"@atdot.co.nz is a valid address, but best of luck making
that one work!

Frankly I'd call it "best practice" to just use alphanumerics for the
username. Or ask the ISP in question to put an alias in place for

Subject: "&" in an email address

A while back there was a discussion about acceptable characters in an email
address but I cannot remember the definitive answer.

I have a friend with and address beginning with rus&[EMAIL PROTECTED] which
used to work but now my ISP (Orcon) is bouncing it back with..

----- The following addresses had permanent fatal errors ----- <rus>
    (reason: User unknown)

----- Transcript of session follows -----
550 5.1.1 <rus>... User unknown

and....

Final-Recipient: RFC822; [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Action: failed
Status: 5.1.1
Diagnostic-Code: X-Unix; 67
Last-Attempt-Date: Tue, 16 May 2006 20:30:24 +1200

Should I suggest that my friends change their address?
