At the last clug meeting someone donated a dunger... It had no harddrive, 16mb of RAM, a network card with no socket on it, a faulty floppy drive, holes in the case, a p133 and not even a USB connection - one might suggest that we were doing the kind donor a favor by clearing junk out of their house (perhaps to make the wife a little happier?).
It was sitting in my hall way, now pissing my wife off, but more importantly, baiting GURU Neil to Routafie (new word, add to dictionary) it. I am happy to report the machines current state... 3.2gig hard drive thanks to Don's magic red bag of spare disks, 96 megs of ram thanks to Don's magic black bag of old 72 pin ram (now fairly empty, hint, hint, hint), a network card with a socket thanks to Don's now completely depleted box old nics (also hint, hint), still no floppy drive (as Don only has one working floppy drive left and that's all GURU Neil required - only hint this time is to bow down to the GURU Neil! - more on that in a minute)... But the exciting bits please... TWO USB ports thanks to GURU Neil, who spotted that the mother board had the plugs on it to connect the $5 adaptor he picked up from South Island Components (shameless commercial plug - because I can). GURU Neil then went on throw two floppies thru the drive and perform some magical DEBIAN dance. Following this magical presentation of pure GURU tallent, we have a fully operational system ready for depolyment... Now you may be wondering just why I am so excited about his USB talents... We also have two WiFry antenna ready for range testing (photos will follow soon). These have been lovingly created by Neil, Rik, Bruce and myself over the past two weeks and a more detailed breakdown of issues (like USB cable legnth) will follow soon. In summary, Thank you very much to the kind donor, GURU Neil for his persistent support, Rik for a trip to his roof (to be explained at a later date), Bruce for his cable advise and my loving wife for putting up with the mess all over our tiny flat! Cheers Don
