Because you might need one on your LAN. Because you might use your
ethernet most of the time, but then want to temporarily switch to
dialup. Because your ethernet modem went down and you want to use dialup
while the ISP gets a fix in. Because ...

The real issue are those configurations which are too stupid to replace 
an already existing default route by pppd. Always worked just by itself
for me. Hint: man pppd. Hint 2: replacedefaultroute

File a bug with your distro.
