I have been pondering this since you posted. Does windows really use
NetBIOS to resolve names when you ping something?

I thought NetBIOS was used for SMB/CIFS name resolutuion, but ping is a
TCP/IP thing.

I just did a test.  I changed a PC to a static IP address with no DNS
servers.  I can ping other hostnames, but nslookup fails.

If it's not using DNS, then what else could it be?
