Googling shows that this is more widespread, but I didn't see anyone mentioning the actual cause and how to fix it. Looks to me like it's caused by something outside of xvidtune. I thought I had it running after installing SUSE 10.1, but now I'm not sure. Potential cuplrits include installing the nvidia driver, xorg changing to 6.9, kernel, gcc 4.1, ...
