Ubuntu is an excellent desktop distro "at the moment", but looks like it's building on lessons learned in the last few years, and should keep that position for many years. But who knows? ;-) It also fits well in the up-to-date server space, but that's not your next requirement ...
I have used Debain as a Router/Firewall/Server and now looking at other version of linux that will do the job...
Well, for real hard work in that space, OpenBSD is unbeatable; however the learning curve is very steep and it will seem to be very outdated and inflexible compared to a linux distro. But that's a good thing for a firewall, and it's stable as a rock. Well, a rock that isn't on a fault line, perhaps!
Otherwise Debian is my recommendation for the 'best' fit there. -jim
